ALBUM OF THE WEEK / ALBWM YR WYTHNOS
Sprinkled with the magic dust of classic 60s records, The Answer is the stunning third album by Pembrokeshire singer-songwriter Jodie Marie on caru.music.
What is immediately striking is the remarkable range of Jodie’s vocals, which channel the spirit of Bonnie Raitt, Carole King and Janis Joplin throughout.
Starting with the beautiful bass-line of You Are My Life, the album introduces itself with three minutes of pure soulful pop that immediately registers - a perfect choice for opening track.
The warm feeling of nostalgia is continued with the Dusty Springfield-esque Ain’t No Doubt About It, while the lead single Carageen is a gorgeous, sun-kissed piano ballad co-written with Ed Harcourt.
A Whole Lot of Loving is a brilliant slice of Motown packed with funky riffs, and the title track wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Back to Black.
Perhaps Jodie’s best vocal is on the Etta James-inspired Kiss These Tears Away, while the poignant Saving Grace is the most moving song on an album filled with emotion.
